How to Convert MyISAM to INNODB in phpMyAdmin

MySQL has a number of options for database storage. Two popular storage engines are MyISAM and INNODB. Each method has its advantages, and the purpose of this brief tutorial is not to debate which one is greater. If, however, you decide that you need to switch from one to the other, this guide should help.

You can perform this conversion from the command line, but you also have the option of using phpMyAdmin for graphical manipulation of your database. To convert from MyISAM to INNODB, follow these steps:

  1. Login to phpMyAdmin (usually at yourdomain.tld/phpmyadmin)

  2. Find your database and click on the table you want to convert

  3. Click the “Operations” tab at the top

  4. In the “Table options” box, change the Storage Engine to INNODB

  5. Click “Go”

  6. Repeat for each table

Assuming all goes well, each conversion will give you a “successful” message at the top of the page in green. Once all tables are converted, check your database and corresponding web application to ensure everything is running smoothly. For a full comparison of MyISAM and INNODB, see this detailed description.
