Dedicated Server Terminology Part 2

The following is a continuation of yesterday’s server terminology. These should help you become more familiar with your dedicated server and will also serve as a quick reference guide in the future.

6. Operating system – An operating system is the primary software on a server that interacts with the hardware, network, and human input. Without an operating system, a server will not function. Common server operating systems include various versions of Unix, Linux, and Windows.

7. Linux – One of the increasingly popular server operating systems, Linux is an umbrella term that actually refers to several operating systems or distributions.

8. Protocol – This term refers to a standard for dealing with the formatting of data, often as it relates to transferring it over a network. There are numerous network protocols, including HTTP (Hypertext Transfer Protocol), HTTPS (Hypertext Transfer Protocol Secure), FTP (File Transfer Protocol), and SSH (Secure Shell).

9. SSH – This is the most common and most secure way to interact directly with your Unix or Linux server. SSH provides a secure shell command line interface, but you can also use it to tunnel just about any other program for secure access, including file transfer.

10. Daemon/Service – On a Unix or Linux-based system, a daemon is a program that runs in the background, requiring no direct input from the user. You can usually configure a daemon to run at boot and then continue to run at specific intervals or permanently. Most Internet-connected programs (web server, database server, and mail server) run as daemons. On Windows Dedicated Servers, programs that function like daemons are referred to as services.
