The dedicated server sounds like a good idea but how do I go about buying one? This is a question that bothers many people. If you too are not sure how to own a dedicated server, this post is for you.
Start with finding out if you need the dedicated server at all. Don’t just get carried away by its benefits; make sure you need what it has to offer. You can check one of our earlier posts, “Are You Ready For the Dedicated Server?” to figure out if it is time for you to invest in a dedicated server.
Once you have made sure you need the server, start checking out the offerings of different hosting companies/service providers. Do check out different companies to draw a fair comparison. Here are a few of our favorites:
Next, find out the degree of server management the hosting companies can provide. You may think that you don’t need managed hosting at this stage but don’t rule out the possibility of going for it at a later stage. Managed hosting provides you peace of mind and lets you focus on other work.
When choosing the company to buy the dedicated server from, inquire about the following:
- The level and the type of technical support provided: Ideally, you should go for a company that provides 24×7 support.
- The SLA or “service level agreement” – this is how much uptime they guarantee and how much you will be reimbursed for not meeting those minimums.
Before you make your final decision, do check out the reviews of each hosting company’s service. Make sure you understand all the terms and conditions when you are signing the deal with the chosen company.
