SSH tunneling is a method of connection that, as the name implies, tunnels your information stream through SSH. The result is an encrypted and secure transaction, even if the standard connection method itself is not normally secure. Many system administrators may use SSH tunneling for file transfer, database management and many other tasks.
The benefits of SSH tunneling are:
- A secure transaction even for connections that normally would not be
- The ability to access a connection that might be blocked by your place of employment or other institution. You can use a different port and also mask the information from prying eyes.
- As a result of #2, you have increased privacy
- Better security management – If you are allowing other users to connect to your server, you can rest a little easier knowing that they are using secure SSH accounts
SSH tunneling is secure, affordable and easy to setup. It is not the only method out there, but it is certainly one of the best.
