In fact anywhere you see the term 'VDS' your probably getting an older server (hardware or software) as the term has more or less died out to 'VPS', and the host hasn't gotten around to adjusting their website. The better hosts will usually be bragging about which virtualization software they use XEN over say OpenVZ. One of the better VPS hosts is linode.
